This savoury French toast will satisfy all your egg cravings without the egg!
Growing up we always had savoury French toast, I actually didn't know people had it sweet until I got older so it was great to be able to recreate that and make it vegan. I used Kala namak aka black salt to give it the egg flavour and it works perfectly. So delicious and makes a great breakfast, brunch of lunch.
Kala namak can be found at Indian grocery stores (or at the Cruelty Free shop for my Aussie friends)
When it comes to using black salt you only need a small amount. You'll notice when you open the packaging or when adding to the recipe it will smell SO much like egg. I find the smell is stronger than the actual taste is. It does give it an "eggy" taste but it is a little more mild than the smell is. My tips for using this salt in recipes is not to overcook because the egg flavour does go away.
If you use this salt in something like scrambled tofu, add it to the pan at the very end and don't cook for too long so you keep some of that egg flavour :)

RECIPE:
This made enough for 2 or 3 slices of bread
1/2 cup soy milk
2 tbsp butter or spread
2 tbsp nutritional yeast
2 tbsp plain flour
1/2 tsp black salt (Kala Namak)
Small pinch of turmeric Pinch of black pepper
1. Combine the milk with the butter in a small bowl and microwave so the butter melts.
2. Add the flour, nutritional yeast, black salt, turmeric and pepper and mix together. You can add more salt if you wish but the taste might be too salty. Adjust to your taste.
3. Dip the slices of bread in and coat on all sides. Cook in a pan on medium heat until golden brown on both sides. Serve with veggies, salad or anything else you might like.
Enjoy!
